The SDCC Firefly panel in out-of-context quotes
Jeff Jensen (introducing Alan Tudyk): Our next guest wanted to be introduced as “bounty hunter and sandwich maker”; you know him better as a leaf on the wind.
***
Joss Whedon: It goes beyond vindication, vindication came a long time ago, and it goes to a place of transcendence that I can’t describe without becoming a girly man, more of a girly man than I already am.
***
Nathan Fillion: If i can get through this without crying it’ll look a lot cooler.
***
Tim Minear; Oh, I never think anything Joss is going to do in TV will be a hit show.
Nathan: That’s fair.
***
Nathan: I can’t help but think I should have been paying more attention to the question.
Alan: Can I answer, Can I! What Nathan means to say…
When we first started filming, Nathan came up to the cast and everyone and said okay, we,re learning everyone’s names. His name is David, his name is Jim, his name is Brian, and I’m winning, and he took off!
***
Adam Baldwin, on the hat: This like a birthday cake in a wasteland.
***
Nathan: Who was outside last night and got woken up by this guy? (Points at Joss. Audience in the front rows screams and cheers.)
***
Joss on the cast:. …honestly the finest meat puppets I have ever controlled.
***
Joss: Summer is so crazy! And the amount of vulnerability and strength she can convey is beyond magnetic. I look at her and I think, I will come with her if I want to live.
***
Joss: Jewel makes me cry and Gina is the most badass woman I’ve ever seen.
***
Joss: The people who are not here, my heart is breaking that they are not here, not just to experience this, but because I miss them so much.
[…]
I want the whole set! Two, so that I can keep one in the box, in my basement in a jar
(Hilarious frozen look from Summer.)
***
Joss on Nathan Fillion: We had a visiting actor who was very disrespectful to the females in the cast and he got a taste of what happens when you threaten his loved ones, and you don’t want that.
(Nathan wipes his eyes.)
Joss: He gets very Canadian about it.
***
Joss: I sometimes look back at the movie Serenity and think of it as one of the finest nervous breakdowns a man could ever have.
***
(After Nathan and Alan improvise a little scene of Mal and Wash as if they were doing a radio show:)
Joss: Sean, say something really smart.
Sean: Um. I think you have a fever?
Nathan: and the only cure is more Firefly.
***
Nathan: When Firefly died I thought it was the worst thing that could possibly happen. What I realize now, looking over this room, is that the worst thing that could have happened is if it had stayed dead.
Joss: Could everyone tweet that I said that?
***
Audience: have you guys ever camped out all night long? And if so what was it?
Joss: Camping!
Jose: I did camping once but I called my mom to pick me up in the middle of the night.
Tim: The only camping I ever did was Baby Jane or some other gay classic,
***
Last question for Joss: “We’re still flying” is a big mantra of the fan community, what do the fans mean to you?
(It’s a long time before everyone can stop crying. What follows is an abbreviated, inaccurate in places attempt at getting down what Joss said:)
When you come out of a great movie you feel like you’re still in that world […] The world of Firefly has become that.
When you’re tying to tell a story, you’re trying to connect to people in a particular way.
The way you have inhabited this particular universe has made you part of the story; you are part of Firefly.
When I see you guys I don’t think there’s a show, I think it’s alive; I think there are spaceships, and horses, and I think it’s alive.
