Blogging San Diego Comic-Con (and maybe other conventions as well).

Assorted notes: Day One and other things.

Today I’m going to a handful of different panels and am currently waiting for the Spotlight on Grant Morrison panel to start. Husband scored a Lego Cube Dude Star Wars set (we had to stand in line for the opportunity to draw a ticket that entitled us to buy the set).

Lots of Scott Pilgrim costumes this year; Ramona is especially popular with the girls. There’s a few Doctor Horribles, and the usual wide array of Marvel and assorted anime folks. I haven’t seen a single Rorschach and only one Joker; costume fashions move so quickly these days. Incredibly, I’ve only seen one Slave Leia. Tomorrow I’m dressing up as the Rani and am meeting up with a couple of my internet friends who are dressing as the Tenth Doctor and Simm Master.

I counted at least fourteen usages of the phrase “just for you” and its variants “exclusively for you” and so forth during yesterday’s marathon Hall H campout. (The only one I missed was The Expendables, opting instead for the SFX British Invasion panel; according to my friends, I made the better choice.) I’m actually sort of glad to have done the campout once, but I’m not going back there for the rest of the con and I’d just as soon not have to do it again. You start to feel a bit like a mushroom after a while.

Still, the Tron stuff was pretty brilliant; Red looks really entertaining (and it was somewhat delightful to hear Helen Mirren use the phrase “shit-scared”); and Edgar Wright was having way too much fun moderating the Scott Pilgrim panel. (Poor Brian Lee O’Malley looked absolutely terrified.by the 7000-strong crowd.) The only blot on the day was trying to leave. 50,000 people trying to leave the convention center and cross the street into the Gaslamp District is no fucking joke.
